Kath. Pfarrkirche Mariae Himmelfahrt
The Catholic parish church of the Assumption stands in the small town of Mank in Lower Austria’s Melk district. Built to honour the feast of the Assumption, it belongs to the deanery of Melk in the diocese of St Pölten and is protected as a listed monument. The present structure grew from a 14th-century choir to a large late-Gothic hall church in the early 16th century. Its history began as a vicariate in 1323–24, became a parish in 1365 and remained tied to the canons of St Pölten until 1784. A 17th-century revival of the local pilgrimage led to 20th-century restorations in 1911 and 1961. During preparations for further work in 2021, a 1910 document about the tower crown consecration was found sealed in the turret ball. Outside, the steep roofs are covered with curved tiles and buttresses frame tall late-Gothic windows. The west front shows a plain Baroque gable with statues of Saint Joseph, Saint Anne and the Virgin. Inside, a four-bay hall has net-ribbed vaults and wide pointed arches on octagonal piers. The high altar of about 1730 carries a group of figures including a late-19th-century Madonna and Child by Franz Hofer. The pulpit, dated 1731, displays a continuous relief of Pentecost and is paired with a sculptural group of the Holy Family and the Three Kings.
