Pfarrkirche hl. Nikolaus in Lech

The Roman Catholic parish church of Lech am Arlberg stands in the village of Lech in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. It sits at 1 444 metres above sea level and is protected as a national monument. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and belongs to the Bludenz-Sonnenberg deanery in the diocese of Feldkirch. The present building began in 1390 on the site of an earlier chapel. A late-Gothic church replaced it at the end of the 15th century, keeping the early-Gothic tower. In 1603 the nave was rebuilt while the Gothic doorways were kept. A double onion dome was added in 1694, and in 1791 the interior was stuccoed and renovated. The church mixes Baroque and Gothic styles throughout. Outside, the church is surrounded by a cemetery and topped with a common roof over the nave and choir. The north tower wears its double onion dome and holds Gothic sound openings. Inside, the nave has flat-barrel vaulting on a projecting cornice, while the two-bay choir ends in a three-sided apse with a net-ribbed vault. Frescoes cover the walls, including works by Andreas Mayr, Julius Wehinger and Martin Häusle. The high altar shows the Adoration of the Magi and a figure of Saint Nicholas, with an 1891 organ by Anton Behmann.
