Waldfriedhof Solln

The Waldfriedhof Solln is a cemetery in the Munich district of Solln near the Warnberg. It stands apart from the city’s other large cemeteries, set in a quiet wooded landscape rather than a formal park. The main entrance is on the south side, marked by a church-like hall with painted walls and an adjoining building group. This entrance area is listed in the Bavarian monument register. An old oak avenue along the Warnbergstraße provides a shaded approach. The cemetery is worth visiting for its rare plant life and the graves of notable figures. Among the rarest Munich lichens, Bryoria fuscescens, grows here on old oaks. Since 1936 the site has been enlarged twice and now covers about seven hectares with around three thousand burial plots. Architects and town planners still recognise its design as an important example of 20th-century cemetery culture. Names like Werner Abrolat, Carl Johann Becker-Gundahl and Franz Biebl rest here, each with a numbered grave. Visitors walk shaded paths beneath tall trees and past simple stone markers. The graves range from family plots to urn niches, arranged in numbered sections. Some graves carry small bronze nameplates, others plain inscriptions. The atmosphere is calm, with only the sound of wind in the branches. The cemetery’s layout guides mourners gently through the wooded grounds, offering quiet places to pause.
