The Atzelberg rises above the Taunus hills near Eppenhain, a village within Kelkheim in Hesse. Its skyline is marked by a steel radio tower that stands out against the green slopes. The mountain belongs to the High Taunus natural region yet lies within the district of Main-Taunus-Kreis. A paved path leads from the village up to the summit through beech and oak woodland. The climb takes about forty minutes for most walkers. The tower’s silhouette can be seen from kilometres away on clear days.

The summit holds the Luisenturm, a 27-metre steel observation tower built in the 19th-century style. It replaced an older wooden structure that once stood on the same spot. The new tower uses welded tubular steel in a three-dimensional truss design without visible joints. The viewing platform sits at twenty metres above ground and offers a wide view over the Taunus and towards Frankfurt. The tower is named after a local noblewoman who supported its construction.

Visitors reach the platform by climbing 126 internal steps. The surrounding forest is quiet except for the wind in the treetops and the occasional call of jays. On the western side the land drops steeply toward the Rhine plain. The tower’s lantern is lit at night and can be seen from the surrounding villages. The summit also has a small car park and a map board showing walking routes.
