Shadwell

Shadwell is a Docklands Light Railway station in east London’s Tower Hamlets. It sits on a brick viaduct between the old docklands and the City, with Bank station just west and Limehouse to the east. The station opened in 1987 as part of the first DLR line and replaced an earlier station that once served the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway. Its single island platform now handles three-car trains after a 2009 refurbishment that added an emergency exit and altered the ground-level entrance. Watney Street runs below the western end, where ticket machines face the street. The station is usually unstaffed, like most DLR stops, but a crossover west of the platforms lets trains reverse if needed. The station is worth the journey for its role in east London’s transport network. It carries up to 30 trains an hour at peak times, linking Shadwell to Bank, Tower Gateway, Beckton, Woolwich Arsenal and Lewisham via Canary Wharf. London Overground services at the nearby Shadwell station allow out-of-station interchanges on the same ticket. London Buses routes 100, 339 and D3 stop outside, making it easy to reach places like Wapping, Canary Wharf and Mile End. The 1991 Bank extension joins the main DLR line just west of Shadwell, keeping journeys to the City short. Visitors find a simple but efficient station on a raised brick viaduct. The single island platform serves trains in both directions, with steps or lifts down to Watney Street. The entrance is small and functional, with ticket machines at ground level. Outside, Watney Street’s market stalls and local shops give a slice of east London life. The station’s crossover lets trains turn back, adding flexibility to the timetable. Despite its modest size, Shadwell keeps the Docklands connected to the heart of London.
