Rechter Fernerkogel

The Rechter Fernerkogel is a 3,300-metre peak in the Weißkam range of the Ötztal Alps in Austrian Tirol. It stands at the end of the Pitztal valley, surrounded by the Mittelbergferner glacier. To its north-east, on the same glacier edge, rises the 3,277-metre Linker Fernerkogel. The first ascent was made in 1874 by Carl Zöppritz with local guides Alois Grüner and G. Praxmarer. The climb is graded UIAA II along the north-west ridge, taking about an hour and a half from the Braunschweiger Hütte. The south-west ridge route is longer, usually three hours. Those starting from the Pitzexpress mountain station at Mandarfen cover roughly eight kilometres in four and a half hours to reach the top. Paths begin either at the hut or the 2,841-metre station. The glacier sections demand care, and the final ridges are narrow and exposed. Views stretch across the Pitztal and into the Ötztal Alps, rewarding those who reach the summit.
