Burg Grünbach
Burg Grünbach stands on a low hill beside the newer Schloss Grünbach in the village of Grünbach, Bockhorn municipality. The site is a spur of land rising to about 480 metres above sea level, part of the Schlosspark. The first local noble family, the Pern von Groninpach, is recorded in 1075. The castle itself was built in the 12th century by the Herren von Grünbach. By around 1250 the Wittelsbachs had taken possession, followed in the 14th century by the Herren von Fraunberg. The castle’s later owners, the Herren von Preysing-Moos, demolished it in 1581 and turned the Sedlhof below into a country manor. Only a single tower mound survives today, clearly visible in Michael Wening’s 17th-century engraving. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation lists the site as Bodendenkmal D-1-7638-0028, noting remains of both the high-medieval castle and an early-modern chapel with Calvary and hermitage. Visitors find a quiet grassy mound in the park, marked by a low earthwork. An information board explains the vanished castle and chapel. The surrounding Schlosspark offers shaded walks among mature trees. From the mound there are views across the gently rolling countryside of eastern Bavaria. The site invites a short pause to imagine the medieval fortress that once stood here.
