Burg Müneck stands on a hilltop 543 metres above sea level near Breitenholz, a village in Ammerbuch. The site overlooks the steep drop into the Ammertal valley and commands wide views south and west. Two small streams, the Grosser Goldersbach and the Käsbach, flank the hill, giving the builders a natural defence. The remains lie within a 459-hectare nature reserve created in 2000. The hill itself is part of the Schönbuch, a large forested region in the Tübingen district.
The castle was built in the 11th or 12th century by the lords of Müneck, a branch of the Hailfingen family who served the counts of Tübingen. It first appears in records in 1259 when Hugo von Müneck sold a farm to Kirchberg monastery. By the mid-14th century the family had sold most of their land, and the fortress was abandoned. Stones were taken away for other uses, leaving only earthworks and a few dressed stones.
Today the visitor finds a grassy plateau surrounded by a deep ditch more than ten metres deep. A low outer rampart runs along the southern and western edges. No walls or buildings remain, though faint traces of foundations can be seen. The site is quiet, shaded by beech and oak, and offers clear views to other former watchpoints. Archaeologist Konrad Albert Koch examined the ruins in 1924 and published his findings the following year.
