Ottenberg
The Ottenberg stands in the Franconian Jura, a limestone plateau in northern Bavaria. It rises to 588 metres between the villages of Kadenzhofen to the west and Pilsach to the east. The Schwarzach river curves around its western flank, while the smaller Pilsach stream runs past its eastern slopes.
The hill is part of the Haimburg-Wallerbuch-Ottenberg landscape protection area, established in 1965. On the summit a ruined castle wall still traces the old ramparts. To the northwest, where the land drops toward the Schmidberg, a glider airfield has operated since 1966.
Visitors walk through mixed woodland to reach the summit. The remains of the medieval fortification are visible as low earthworks. From the top there are wide views across the valleys of the Schwarzach and Pilsach. The airfield below offers a chance to watch gliders taking off and landing.
