St Michael's and All Angels Church, Guiting Power

St Michael’s and All Angels stands at the southern edge of Guiting Power, a limestone village in the Cotswolds. Built of local limestone with slate roofs, the church has a simple cruciform plan: a nave, north and south transepts, a west tower, and a chancel with a north vestry. The oldest parts date from the 12th century, though only two Norman doorways survive from that time. The tower was added in the 15th century and the nave walls raised, while 19th-century transepts doubled the church’s size to meet a growing congregation. The church is recognised for its Grade II* listing and holds features from several centuries. The font is 15th century, the pews 19th, and the organ from 1978 with an extra stop added in 1985. A small Saxon sarcophagus lies inside, one of the smallest in England. The chancel contains stained glass by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, and a wooden plaque behind the altar shows Jesus carrying the cross, dated 1601. The bellchamber displays donation boards, and over the south door hangs the royal coat of arms of George III. Outside, the churchyard shelters a medieval cross base and a pair of unidentified monuments from 1777 and 1787. War graves mark the resting places of two First World War soldiers and a Second World War airman and medical officer. The tower rises in three stages with embattled parapets and diagonal buttresses, while the chancel shows Early English lancets and a priest’s door. The whole stands on a quiet slope, its stonework weathered by centuries of Cotswold rain.
