Kirkoswald Parish Church

Kirkoswald Parish Church stands in the quiet village of Kirkoswald along the A77 in South Ayrshire. Built in 1777, the church shows strong influence from Robert Adam, the architect behind Culzean Castle. Its design remains largely as it was when first completed, with only minor changes made after a 1997 fire revealed rot and fungus. The renovation restored the interior to its original colour scheme using advice from historians at Culzean Castle. The older church it replaced, dating from around 1220, still stands in ruins within the village graveyard. The graveyard holds many graves tied to Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. The churchyard is notable for its links to Burns, whose mother came from Kirkoswald. Burns himself spent nine months in the village in 1776 at the age of seventeen. Many characters from his poem *Tam o’ Shanter* are based on people buried here, and their graves are marked accordingly. Among the graves is that of Scipio Kennedy, an African man brought to Scotland as a slave in 1702. He lived on the Culzean estate and was freed in 1725. The churchyard also contains graves of local families with long histories in the area. Inside the church, the simple layout reflects Adam’s influence, with clean lines and careful proportions. The walls and furnishings were restored to match the original design as closely as possible. The churchyard paths wind past weathered headstones, some dating back centuries. The old church ruins sit in the centre of the graveyard, surrounded by yew and sycamore trees. Visitors often walk among the graves, reading the inscriptions and imagining the lives once lived here. The peaceful setting offers a quiet space to reflect on history and memory.
