Quantum Cloud

The Quantum Cloud is a contemporary sculpture by Antony Gormley, standing next to The O2 in Greenwich. It was completed in 1999 and reaches 30 metres high, making it Gormley’s tallest work. The sculpture consists of tetrahedral steel units, each 1.5 metres long, arranged with a random walk algorithm. At its centre is a residual outline based on Gormley’s body. The design reflects Gormley’s discussions with quantum physicist Basil Hiley about pre-space and mathematical structures. Gormley drew inspiration from Hiley’s ideas on the relationships underlying space and matter. The sculpture’s structural design was handled by Elliott Wood Partnership, while Beckett Rankine designed the foundations. Tubeworkers (Structures) Ltd fabricated the steel sections. Quantum Cloud is part of The Line, a trail of public artworks along the Greenwich Meridian. Visitors find a towering, open framework of steel units that creates shifting shadows and light effects. The sculpture’s abstract form invites close inspection from its base. From a distance, its outline merges with the sky, emphasising its height. The surrounding area includes The O2 and the Thames Path, linking it to other landmarks. The work stands as a landmark of modern art in Greenwich.
