St Mary's Church, Mellor

St Mary’s Church stands on Church Lane in the village of Mellor, Lancashire. Built between 1827 and 1829, it is an active Anglican parish church designed by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson. The church received a grant of £5,534 from the Church Building Commission, slightly more than the £5,496 cost of construction. In 1897–99 it was restored and altered by Austin and Paley, who raised the east end to create a chancel and added a screen and choir furnishings. The church is a Grade II listed building, recognised for its historical and architectural importance. Its exterior reflects the Commissioners’ church style, with simple yet elegant sandstone and slate construction. The church’s architecture blends early 19th-century design with later Victorian additions. The exterior features a six-bay nave, north and south aisles, and a three-stage west tower topped by a needle spire. The tower includes single-light windows and bell openings, while the aisles are marked by buttresses and paired lancet windows. Inside, five-bay arcades with pointed arches rest on clustered columns, and a west gallery holds a carved organ. The chancel screen incorporates a pulpit, and the white marble font has a carved cover with a pyramidal spire and angels. Stained glass includes windows by Capronnier, Whitefriars, and possibly Shrigley and Hunt. The churchyard contains war graves of ten Commonwealth service personnel from the First World War and six from the Second. The interior also features a three-manual organ built by Renn and Boston and extended by Edwin Smith in 1897. The east window consists of five stepped lancets, and the chancel’s single-light windows add to the light-filled space. The church’s setting in Mellor, with its rural surroundings, offers a quiet place for reflection. The combination of early 19th-century design and late Victorian craftsmanship makes it a notable example of its period.
