Burg Malterdingen

Burg Malterdingen once stood on a narrow ridge 235 metres above sea level, one kilometre south-west of the village centre. Built in the 12th century, it guarded the land around Malterdingen in the Breisgau region. The castle belonged to the local lords who controlled the surrounding farmland and trade routes. Few traces remain today. Only the deep defensive ditch at the neck of the ridge survives from the original structure. Archaeologists recognise its shape as typical of medieval spur castles built for quick retreat. Written records from the period mention the site, but no buildings or towers survive above ground. Visitors walk up a quiet farm track to reach the ridge. The flat top offers wide views over the Emmendingen valley and the Black Forest in the distance. The spot is peaceful, with only the sound of wind in the grass and distant farm machinery. A simple information board explains what once stood there. The place invites quiet reflection on the vanished fortress and the lives once lived within its walls.
