Pécs Subregion

Pécs lies in the rolling hills of Baranya county in southern Hungary, near the Croatian border. The city serves as the county seat and once formed the centre of a small administrative district covering 570 square kilometres. At the heart of the region stands Pécs itself, a city of almost 150 000 people spread over 160 square kilometres. The next largest settlement is Kozármisleny, home to about six thousand residents. The landscape here is a patchwork of vineyards, orchards and gentle slopes. The area has long been recognised for its density and diversity. With more than three hundred people living on every square kilometre, it ranks as the most populous district in Baranya. The city’s university, founded in the 14th century, has shaped Pécs into an intellectual and cultural hub. Baroque churches, Ottoman-era mosques and modern art galleries sit side by side in its streets. Local wine growers cultivate the slopes around Pécs, producing robust reds from the Kékfrankos grape. Visitors walk through tree-lined avenues past pale stone buildings that glow golden at dusk. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter showcases colourful ceramics from the famous 19th-century factory. Above the city, the Early Christian Necropolis contains fourth-century tombs carved into soft rock. From the TV tower on Mecsek Hill the whole basin unfolds, framed by vineyards and distant villages. The air carries the scent of ripening plums and the faint tang of oak barrels from nearby cellars.
