Hintere Suwaldspitze

The Hintere Suwaldspitze is a 2,159-metre peak in the Lechtal Alps of Tirol. It stands west of the Steinmandlspitze, linked by a narrow rocky ridge. The nearest villages are Miteregg to the west and Berwang to the north. The summit can only be reached without marked paths. The surrounding rock is mainly main dolomite, giving the southern slopes wide stretches of dwarf pine and the northern side steep, broken faces. Climbers reach the top by two unmarked routes that demand sure-footedness. One starts from the Sonnbergsattel, passing the Vordere Suwaldspitze before tackling the broad ridge to the summit in about two and a half hours from Berwang. The other leaves from the Steinmandlspitze, dropping into the southwest flank and then regaining height along the ridge or via path traces in the southern face, taking forty-five minutes from the Steinmandlspitze. On the summit ridge the panorama stretches across the Lechtal Alps and the Wetterstein range. The steep northern walls drop sharply into narrow gullies while the southern slopes carry scattered pine scrub. The contrast between the rugged rock faces and the gentler alpine meadows below makes the climb worthwhile.
