St. Oswald, Kath. Filialkirche St. Oswald

The small Gothic church of St Oswald stands on a gentle slope above the village of Sankt Oswald in the Kartitsch valley, surrounded by a walled cemetery. Its square tower rises beside the choir, capped by an eight-sided spire and showing paired louvres. A 17th-century sundial marks the south-east slope of the polygonal apse, while the outer wall of the nave carries a modern fresco of the Resurrection. The church preserves its 15th-century structure despite later changes. The three-bay nave, rebuilt in 1759, is covered by a ribbed vault with round bosses painted with foliage and coats of arms. The choir, also rib-vaulted, holds late-15th-century frescoes of Saint Oswald with saints and donor, and a sequence of 17th-century Secco panels depicting angels, the Transfiguration and the Trinity. On the north wall Jakob Worath’s vivid Last Judgement faces a 1663 Man of Sorrows with donor inscription. Inside, the high altar of about 1800 frames a painting of Saint Oswald flanked by Leonhard and Sylvester, while the former side altar on the left bears a 16th-century Pietà by Michael Parth. A carved pulpit from 1679 and a suspended Madonna in a rose-garden date from the early 17th century. The simple cemetery chapel opposite the church contains a baroque Crucifixion group and an altar with a picture of Anthony of Padua.
