Heimathaus und Zollmuseum Perwang

The Zoll- und Heimatmuseum stands in Perwang am Grabensee, a village in Upper Austria’s Braunau district. The timber building, protected since the 18th century, was once a customs post between Austria and the Archbishopric of Salzburg. In 1767 the monastery of Stift Michaelbeuern had it built to house its staff. From 1779 until 1809 the house served as the frontier customs station. Today the same walls shelter two museums under one roof. Uniforms, cash boxes and the 18th-century Raffelstetten customs regulations are displayed alongside old maps and receipts. The Heimatmuseum section preserves local farming tools, household objects and photographs from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors can trace how salt, grain and cattle crossed the border here for three decades. The building itself, with its simple timber construction and small windows, shows how officials once worked. Inside, the ground floor keeps the customs office as it looked in the 1790s. Upstairs, the Heimatmuseum fills several rooms with everyday life from the region. Outside, the quiet lakeside village offers walks along the Grabensee shore. The building’s plain exterior hides the stories of travellers and traders who passed through for generations.
