Eiskogel
The Eiskogel is a striking peak in the Tennen Mountains, part of the Northern Limestone Alps in Salzburg. It stands at 2,321 metres with sheer rock faces up to 1,000 metres high on its south and west sides. To the north and east, gentler grass and schrofen slopes lead down to the broad plateau of the Tennen range. The double summit rises near Werfenweng, close to the border between the Tennengau and Pongau regions. Climbers often aim for the Great Eiskogel, though the normal route requires no technical skills. In winter, it becomes a popular ski tour and is included in a longer crossing of the Tennen range. The only main route starts in Wengerau and takes about four hours to reach the summit. It passes the Dr.-Heinrich-Hackel-Hütte and winds through mountain pine slopes and a scree-covered cirque. The path then climbs to the Stiegl, a rocky and exposed section secured with cables. From the Tauernscharte, the route continues over grassy slopes to the Eiskogel. At the foot of the summit block lies the Eiskogelhöhle cave, adding to the mountain’s appeal. The Tauernkogel rises further east, completing the dramatic scenery of the area.
