Gesamtanlage Horn - Stadtbefestigung

The town fortifications of Horn enclose the old town of the town of Horn in the district of Horn in Lower Austria. The remaining sections of the town walls are protected as historic monuments and illustrate the development of the fortifications from 1304 to the 17th century. The wall remnants reach heights of up to 8 metres and are constructed from rubble stone with rectangular battlements and arrow slits. The fortifications formed part of the town’s defensive system and originally included three town gates. The Prague Gate was demolished in 1895, the Vienna Gate in 1863 and the Raab Gate in 1867. Parts of the wall were built over, particularly in the area of the civic hospital and the castle, and were integrated as substructures into the buildings. The town fortifications encircle the old town and remain visible as part of the historic landscape. The wall remnants are scattered throughout the old town and can be seen in the vicinity of historic buildings and squares. The fortifications bear witness to the town’s development and to the military defensive strategies of the period.
