Murinsel

The Murinsel is an artificial floating island in the middle of the Mur river in Graz, Austria. It links the two banks with two footbridges and was designed by New York artist Vito Acconci for Graz’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2003. The structure resembles a giant sea shell, measuring 47 metres in length. At night, blue navigation lights outline the island, making it a striking landmark. The artist described it as a form that shifts between a bowl and a dome. The centre of the platform holds an amphitheatre for events and performances. The island’s twisted round dome shelters a café and a playground beneath it. Visitors can walk across the footbridges to reach the island from either bank. The amphitheatre hosts concerts, theatre and other cultural events throughout the year. The café offers drinks and light meals with views of the river and the city. The playground provides a space for children to play while parents relax nearby. The design blends art, function and public space in an unusual riverside setting. From the island, views stretch along the Mur towards Graz’s old town and modern districts. The blue night lights reflect on the water, creating a calm, inviting atmosphere. The footbridges frame the river’s gentle curves, guiding visitors to and from the island. The amphitheatre’s open sides let breezes drift across the platform in summer. The café’s terrace overlooks passing boats and cyclists along the riverbank. The playground’s bright colours contrast with the shell’s smooth curves, adding to the island’s playful charm.
