Wasserturm Bad Liebenwerda

The Wasserturm once stood on the Sandberg in Bad Liebenwerda, a small spa town in southern Brandenburg. Built in the early 20th century, it served as the city’s water supply landmark. The tower reached 26.6 metres and held 150 cubic metres of water in its storage tank. Its construction began after years of debate, despite public opposition over costs. The Bremen firm Carl Francke oversaw the project, which cost around 200,000 marks. By November 1909, the first homes received water, though the system soon struggled with rising demand. The tower became a symbol of the city’s growth and changing needs. By the 1950s, its original capacity of 5,000 people proved insufficient. A major reconstruction followed, costing 800,000 marks and finishing in 1957. Yet by 1978, the ageing structure was taken out of service. Damage and falling debris made it unsafe, and plans for reuse were abandoned. A 1987 assessment declared it a ruin, leading to its demolition the following year. Today, the site remains a quiet reminder of the city’s past. The Sandberg offers views over Bad Liebenwerda’s streets and parks. A small plaque marks the tower’s former location, recalling its role in the town’s history. Visitors can still see the old waterworks nearby, part of the same system that once fed the tower. The area is now a peaceful spot for a walk, linking modern spa life with industrial heritage.
