Highline179
Highline179 is a pedestrian suspension bridge near Reutte on the Bavarian–Austrian border. It hangs 114 metres above the Ehrenberg castle ruins and links them with Fort Claudia. The bridge spans 403 metres and was designed to have a gentle slope, with one end 9.85 metres higher than the other. Its walkway is 1.20 metres wide, made of grating supported by four main cables each 60 millimetres thick. Handrails stand 1.35 metres above the walkway on both sides, with wire mesh filling the gaps for safety. The bridge was planned by Maximilian Huttenloher and built under architect Armin Walch. Construction began in April 2014 and finished in October, though the opening was delayed until November 2014. It was later recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest Tibet-style footbridge. The structure uses 16 rock anchors, each driven 17 metres deep, and can support 1,000 people, though only 500 are allowed on at once for safety. Visitors walk across the open grating, feeling the bridge’s gentle sag of 17 metres in the centre. Views stretch across the valley to the castle ruins and surrounding Alps. The bridge connects two historic sites, offering a clear view of the trunk road below and the protective scaffold installed during construction. The route is straightforward, with turnstiles controlling access at both ends.
