Weymouth Bay

Weymouth Bay is a sheltered bay on the south coast of England in Dorset. It lies between Chesil Beach and the Isle of Portland, protecting it from erosion. The bay includes several beaches, the most notable being Weymouth Beach, a gently curving arc of golden sand stretching from the resort of Weymouth. It sits roughly halfway along the UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Natural England defined the bay’s boundaries before the 2012 Olympic Games as the stretch between Rufus Castle on the Isle of Portland and Lulworth Cove. This area covers Portland Harbour, Weymouth Beach, and Ringstead Bay. The bay’s waters are excellent for sailing, considered the best in northern Europe due to its shelter from south-west winds. Portland Bill can be easily accessed by sailing when the tide turns, as an eddy flows along Portland’s eastern side. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, located here, hosted the sailing events for the 2012 Olympic Games. Since then, the Academy has continued to improve its facilities to ensure a lasting legacy from the Games. The bay’s sheltered conditions also inspired the leading English landscape artist John Constable, who painted *Weymouth Bay: Bowleaze Cove and Jordon Hill* in 1816–17. Visitors to Weymouth Bay find a stretch of golden sand at Weymouth Beach, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. The bay’s protected waters make it a prime spot for sailing and water sports, with the National Sailing Academy providing training and events. Along the shore, Rufus Castle on the Isle of Portland offers historic views over the bay. The painting by John Constable captures the bay’s scenic beauty, with Bowleaze Cove and Jordon Hill visible in the landscape. The surrounding area includes rugged cliffs and quiet coves, part of the Jurassic Coast’s diverse scenery. The bay’s sheltered nature ensures calm waters, making it a favoured destination for both relaxation and adventure.
