Scarborough Lighthouse

Scarborough Pier Lighthouse stands on Vincent Pier in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The pier itself was extended in the 18th century by engineer William Vincent, whose name the structure still bears. The lighthouse dates from 1806, though it was rebuilt after damage in the 1914 German bombardment. It is an active aid to navigation owned and operated by North Yorkshire Council. The original tower was a circular brick building topped with a coal-fired brazier. Later, candles and gas lights replaced the brazier before electric power was introduced in the early 20th century. The lighthouse is worth the journey for its engineering history and role in maritime safety. In 1843, the tower was raised by 17 feet and fitted with a Bude-Light that shone up to 13 nautical miles. The gas-powered light was later replaced by a smaller burner due to high costs. During the 1914 bombardment, a shell struck the tower, leaving it unstable and requiring public fundraising to rebuild. The rebuilt lighthouse, completed in 1931, introduced an octagonal lantern and a fog horn. Its light characteristic was changed from red to white to avoid confusion with town lights. Visitors find a 49-foot tower topped with an octagonal lantern on Vincent Pier. The adjacent lodgings, once used by the harbour master, now house Scarborough Yacht Club. The lighthouse shows a white isophase light and remains an active navigation aid. The pier offers views of Scarborough’s coastline and harbour. The tower’s history reflects both technological progress and the town’s resilience. The site stands as a reminder of Scarborough’s maritime heritage.
