Burgstall Niederzwehren
The Burgstall Niederzwehren is the remains of a medieval castle in the Kassel district of Niederzwehren, northern Hesse. Its exact location is uncertain but it is thought to have stood southeast of the church where the Perlenhof later appeared. The Lords of Zwehren, recorded as landowners from the mid-13th to mid-14th centuries and who died out only in the 16th century, are believed to have built and owned the fortress. Historians such as Alois Holtmeyer have linked the site to this noble family whose name also gave the village its title. The castle’s earthworks and slight mounds are all that survive today, offering little more than a sense of its former presence. Written records from the period show the Lords of Zwehren held wide estates across the region. Visitors today find a quiet green space where the castle once stood. A low earthen bank and shallow ditch mark the outline of the former stronghold. The nearby church and modern houses frame the spot, making it easy to overlook unless you know what to look for. The site is small and unadorned, yet it carries the weight of centuries of local history.
