Filialkirche Treffling (Meiselding)

The small Romanesque church in Treffling stands beside the village road in Mölbling parish, St Veit district, Carinthia. First recorded between 1060 and 1076, it was once the private chapel of the Eppenstein family before becoming a filial of Meiselding parish. The modest building is protected as a listed monument and still serves the local Catholic community. Inside, the nave keeps its original Romanesque walls while the choir and sacristy were enlarged in the 15th century. A stone-slated roof crowns the onion-domed bell turret, and the 1646 bell by Lorenz Pez still rings for services. Frescoes of St Christopher from about 1520–30 and a 17th-century crucifix adorn the south wall, while a late-Gothic west door is sheltered by a stone porch. The high altar of 1670 shows St George flanked by angels, and side altars of the 1720s hold figures of St Oswald and the Virgin with St Florian. A hexagonal 14th-century charnel house north-east of the church contains the ossuary beneath its ribbed vault. The late-Gothic sacristy doorway leads into a single-bay vaulted space, and the choir’s five-sided apse is lit by pointed windows. Outside, the nave’s single Romanesque window contrasts with the choir’s Gothic tracery, and the south wall carries traces of early-15th-century paintings including scenes of Kain and Abel.
