Pfarrkirche zur Unbefleckten Empfängnis, Wimpassing an der Leitha
The parish church of Wimpassing an der Leitha stands on a hill above the village in Burgenland. It belongs to the Eisenstadt-Rust deanery in the Diocese of Eisenstadt and is protected as a listed building. A fortified wall from the 16th century surrounds the church and its former Minorite monastery. The church dates back to a medieval parish mentioned in the 14th century. In 1587 the Freiherr von Stotzingen founded a Franciscan monastery here. After the older church was extended, it was consecrated in 1593. The Minorites took over the monastery in 1628. Both church and monastery were destroyed in the Turkish war of 1683. A new church was consecrated in 1723. The monastery was secularised in 1787 and a secular parish established. The uniform Baroque church has a cross-shaped floor plan with side extensions. The high altar features a broad tabernacle with side wings from about 1780. The organ, with ten registers, was built in 1757 by an unknown maker. The former monastery now houses a special school and an inn. A walled graveyard, farmyard and monastery garden surround the buildings. A flight of steps on the southern slope of the hill was added in 1891.
