Westminster Millennium Pier

Westminster Millennium Pier stands on the north bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster. It sits beside Westminster Bridge, a short walk from Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster. The pier replaced an older floating structure that sank in 1955 after a leak caused its middle sections to submerge. That event was widely reported and even parodied on The Goon Show. The current pier was built as part of a Millennium Commission project and opened in 2000 alongside four other new piers. It is run by Uber Boat by Thames Clippers and used by several river transport and cruise operators. The pier offers connections to a range of services along the Thames. Regular boats run to Tower Bridge Quay, Greenwich Pier and the Thames Flood Barrier. Leisure cruises travel to Hampton Court Palace and operate circular routes between Westminster and St Katharine’s. These services form part of an integrated transport strategy led by London’s Cross River Partnership. The pier is also linked to Westminster tube station, making it easy to reach from central London. Visitors find themselves beside some of London’s most famous landmarks. On the north bank stand Big Ben, the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey. A short distance away are the Churchill Museum and the Cabinet War Rooms. On the south bank, the London Eye and Sea Life London Aquarium overlook the river. The Boudica statue and Florence Nightingale Museum are also nearby. The pier itself provides a quiet spot to watch boats pass under Westminster Bridge.
