Loch Achray

Loch Achray is a small freshwater loch in the Trossachs, twelve kilometres west of Callander. It lies between Loch Katrine and Loch Venachar, with an average depth of eleven metres. The loch sits in a valley surrounded by woodland and mountains. The loch was once home to James Stewart, known as Little James, who fled to Ireland after his father’s execution in the 15th century. He later returned and built a hunting lodge on a small island at the west end of the loch. Sir Walter Scott later wrote about the Stewart family in A Legend of Montrose. Anglers visit to fish for brown trout in the sheltered waters. The south shore has woodland tracks and a campsite run by Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Reflections in the loch show the surrounding woods, mountains, and the crags of Ben Venue to the west.
