Nine Elms tube station

Nine Elms is a London Underground station in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It opened in September 2021 as part of the Northern line extension to Battersea. The station serves a rapidly growing area, New Covent Garden Market and the United States Embassy. It stands near the site of the former Nine Elms railway station, once the terminus of the London and South Western Railway. The area has seen major redevelopment in recent years, with new homes, offices and public spaces being built around the station. Transport links include regular bus services day and night. The station is part of the first major Underground extension since the 1990s. It handles around 40,000 trips a week, half the number at Battersea Power Station. Trains run every few minutes to Battersea Power Station and High Barnet via Charing Cross. The station was built using the cut-and-cover method, allowing future development above. Artwork by Mark Wallinger was installed in 2023 to mark the 160th anniversary of the London Underground. Visitors find a modern station with a ticket hall and platforms served by escalators. A new public square is planned above the station as part of a larger development. An archway under the Nine Elms to Waterloo Viaduct now provides a pedestrian route through the area. A Sainsbury’s superstore reopened nearby in 2016 after rebuilding. The station connects to the growing Embassy Gardens and US Embassy developments.
