Altes Schloss (Tettnang)
The Alte Schloss in Tettnang stands in the town centre as a rectangular Renaissance building with a tall pitched roof. Its plain façade is broken only by bold stepped gables and a richly carved alliance coat of arms above the main entrance. The central section carries a gable that holds the town clock and the date of construction. Inside, the ground floor still contains the original barrel-vaulted rooms with heavy 17th-century stucco work. A painting from 1698 in the stairwell shows Saint Anthony pleading for Count Anton III and his wife, with the Bodensee and Langenargen visible below. The council chamber displays a view of Tettnang dated 1818. Outside, the 1682 chapel of St George stands on the site once occupied by the castle chapel. Its single nave is narrow and unadorned, with a recessed choir, and it houses a 1758 baroque high altar moved here in 1828. The whole ensemble forms a quiet corner of the old town near the marketplace.
