Burg Mauel

Burg Mauel stood in Gemünd, now part of Schleiden in North Rhine-Westphalia. It began as an aristocratic seat in the 14th century, when the Mauel family served the lords of Schleiden. The site lay close to iron extraction and smelting works that powered the local economy. By 1420 an ironworks already operated under the castle’s rights. In 1542 imperial troops burned the stronghold during the Jülich Feud, yet Wilhelm von Goltstein rebuilt it quickly. The estate passed in 1594 to Johann Schellart von Obbendorf through marriage. By 1658 the Freiherr von Harff acquired Mauel mainly for its ironworks licence rather than the crumbling buildings. After 1711 the property diversified into paper and steel mills. Albert Poensgen and Friedrich Wilhelm Schoeller ran the steelworks that later moved to Düsseldorf in 1860. By 1930 only the outline of a modest L-shaped manor with a stair turret and a sturdy corner tower remained visible on old maps. The ruins reveal how closely these castles were tied to iron production and trade across the region.
