Schloss Unterzeitldorn stands in Unterzeitldorn, a village on the edge of Straubing in Lower Bavaria. The site includes a three-storey steep-roofed building that was heavily altered in the late 20th century for commercial use. Beneath the present structure lie the buried remains of a medieval lowland castle with its former moat, outbuildings and garden layouts. The castle’s medieval core survives only in fragments, yet its archaeological layers are recognised as a protected monument. Excavations have revealed traces of earlier building phases and parts now lost, showing continuous occupation from the Middle Ages into early modern times. The church of St Jakobus, 120 m to the northeast, marks the village centre while the castle site remains on its quiet edge. Visitors find a quiet courtyard surrounded by modernised wings and later additions. The surviving residential wing still shows its original stonework despite later changes. Paths lead past the outline of the old moat and the buried foundations of former buildings, giving a sense of the castle’s vanished scale. The surrounding village lanes and distant view of Straubing frame the modest remains within their historic setting.
