Laverda is a scattered hamlet straddling three communes in the northern Vicenza countryside. It sits where two mountain streams meet, forming the Laverda torrent that winds south for seven kilometres before reaching the plain. The land rises gently from the valley floor, with fields and vineyards giving way to wooded slopes on every side. The place is worth the journey for its layered history and surviving traces of an older world. The first written mention of the name comes from 1262, and the parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena dates from the late 15th century. In 1494 the doge of Venice rewarded three local families for their wartime service by granting them tax-free trade rights, a privilege that helped shape the community’s fortunes. Visitors find a quiet patchwork of lanes and stone houses grouped into old contrade. The church stands near the confluence of the streams, its present façade completed in 1932. Scattered farmsteads bear names once spoken by German-speaking settlers, while the torrent itself carries water from the heights of Lusiana and Conco down to the plain.
