Kollegiatstift Spital am Pyhrn

The Stift Spital am Pyhrn stands in the village of the same name in Upper Austria’s Traunviertel district. It was founded in the 11th century as a hospice along a key Roman and medieval trade route over the Pyhrn Pass. Emperor Heinrich II gave the land to Bamberg’s bishop with the charge to build a winter-proof shelter. By 1418 it had become a collegiate foundation of canons, later raised to a propstei under Bishop Friedrich von Aufseß, who financed extensive expansions and new churches in the region. The site’s layered history is visible in its architecture. After a 1502 fire the buildings were rebuilt and enlarged, then further reshaped in the 17th and 18th centuries by masters such as Kaspar Schoiswohl, Cipriano Novo and the stucco artist Lorenzo Canevale. The four-winged stift complex centres on a Baroque church completed in 1730 by Johann Michael Prunner, with twin towers rising above a richly decorated façade. Inside, frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte and architectural painting by Francesco Messenta create a unified illusion of space inspired by Andrea Pozzo’s theories. Visitors enter through a wrought-iron grille forged in the 1720s and walk beneath an organ loft supported by curved balconies. The nave’s six side chapels are linked by passages, and the high altar shows the Assumption of the Virgin. Beyond the church, the former deanery now serves as the parish house, its two-storey hall still adorned with Canevale’s stucco ceilings. The surrounding village grew prosperous in the 18th century from ironworks, and the stift’s former economic role is recalled in its arcaded courtyards and vaulted storerooms.
