Burg Kiechlinsbergen

Burg Kiechlinsbergen stands on a low hill at 255 metres above sea level near the village of Kiechlinsbergen. The site lies southeast of the village, in fields called ‘Burg’ and ‘Auf der Burg’. The hilltop once held a medieval stronghold built by the local noble family of Küchlin. They acted as representatives of the Abbey of Andlau, later becoming the village’s overlords. Excavations in 1979 and 1980 uncovered the stone foundations of this vanished fortress. The ruins belong to a small motte-and-bailey castle typical of the region’s 12th- and 13th-century nobility. Historical records show the Küchlins exercising judicial power here on behalf of first the Üsenbergs and then the abbey. Their authority helped shape Kiechlinsbergen’s early development. The site is now recognised as an important link to the Breisgau’s medieval past. Visitors reach the hill by a quiet farm track from Kiechlinsbergen. At the top, low grassy mounds mark where walls once rose. A single interpretive board explains the excavations and the Küchlins’ role. The surrounding vineyards stretch across gentle slopes, offering wide views over the Kaiserstuhl. The peaceful setting contrasts with the site’s former military purpose.
