Weeleyhall Wood

Weeleyhall Wood lies north of Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, covering thirty-one hectares of varied woodland. The site is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust and contains pedunculate oak above coppiced hazel and sweet chestnut planted in the nineteenth century. Diverse soils support different woodland types across the wood. Two ponds add damp habitats, and grassy rides through the trees are rich in species. Four kinds of fern grow here alongside the largest Essex population of climbing corydalis. The wood’s plant life makes it a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Its coppice management keeps the canopy open and encourages ground flora. The nineteenth-century chestnut plantings now form part of the mature woodland structure. Paths follow the old rides where damp grassland flowers still appear. The ponds hold water throughout the year, supporting wetland plants and insects. Visitors reach the wood by a track leading from the B1441 road. Inside, wide grassy rides invite quiet walking between the oak and chestnut stands. The coppiced hazel stools show the woodland’s managed history. Damp hollows and rides display ferns and wildflowers in season. The ponds attract dragonflies and other insects on summer days.
