Lünersee

The Lünersee is a large lake in the Austrian Alps near Bludenz in Vorarlberg. It sits at an altitude of 1,970 metres above sea level, surrounded by rugged peaks and high alpine meadows. The lake was formed naturally but its depth was increased by 72 metres when a hydroelectric dam was built in 1958. Four power plants—Lünersee, Rodund I, Rodund II and Walgau—now draw water from the lake. A cable car called the Lünerseebahn connects the lake to the village of Brand below. The dam and power plants make the lake an important site for renewable energy in the region. The water from the lake travels through tunnels and pipes to generate electricity for thousands of homes. The cable car ride up the mountain offers views of steep cliffs and glaciers along the way. At the top, visitors find a high-altitude lake set against a dramatic alpine landscape. On the shores of the lake, paths lead to viewpoints over the water and surrounding peaks. The area is popular with hikers in summer and skiers in winter. The contrast between the deep blue water and the pale limestone cliffs creates striking scenery. The Lünersee remains a quiet spot despite its role in powering the region.
