Square earthwork enclosure 450m north west of Baltic Farm on Morgan's Hill

Morgan’s Hill Enclosure is a square earthwork on a gentle slope in Wiltshire, about 130 metres north of the Wansdyke. The site covers roughly 3.25 hectares and is surrounded by a low bank up to 0.6 metres high. A ditch runs outside the bank, up to 4 metres wide and 1 metre deep. Three entrances break the earthwork’s sides, though their original purpose remains uncertain. The enclosure lies 4.8 kilometres south-east of Calne and 6.4 kilometres west of Avebury. Archaeologists consider such enclosures to be Neolithic or Romano-British farmsteads, used as stock pens or protected crop areas. A small dig in 1909 found only medieval pottery, offering no clear clues to its builders. Comparable sites appear near Avebury, a major prehistoric complex in use during the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The enclosure’s simple design suggests a practical purpose rather than defensive use. Visitors walk around the grass-covered bank and peer into the shallow ditch that once bordered it. The flat interior shows no standing stones or obvious structures, just open ground framed by the earthworks. From the top of Morgan’s Hill the enclosure sits below, its square shape clear against the surrounding fields. The site offers little to see beyond the earthen lines themselves, yet the scale and age make it an intriguing reminder of ancient farming life.
