Horsham Unitarian Church

Horsham Unitarian Church stands on the west side of Worthing Road in the ancient market town of Horsham, West Sussex. The plain brick chapel dates from 1720–21 and was built for General Baptists who had gathered in the area since the 1640s under the leadership of Matthew Caffyn. It is the town’s second oldest surviving religious building, older only than St Mary’s parish church. English Heritage has listed the chapel at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance. The simple design reflects the modest expectations of early Nonconformist congregations. Its modest scale and domestic feel remain unchanged despite later internal changes. The chapel is worth the journey because it embodies Horsham’s long tradition of Protestant Nonconformism. Founded in 1719, it served worshippers from across Sussex, with up to 350 attending in its early years. The congregation moved towards Unitarian beliefs in the 19th century, and the building reflects this shift. It was extended several times, including the addition of a pulpit in 1752 and a baptistery in 1772. The chapel also hosted Horsham’s first library and a museum founded in 1893. Its Grade II listing recognises its national importance as a place of worship and community history. Inside, the chapel retains a plain, cottage-like character with simple pews and a rebuilt porch. A stone tablet commemorates a bequest from Elizabeth Gatford, who endowed bread for the poor in the late 18th century. The garden, once used for burials, still holds traces of its past. The chapel remains in use today as part of the Unitarian movement. Its quiet presence on Worthing Road offers a glimpse of Horsham’s Nonconformist heritage.
