Burgruine Dobra
The ruins of Dobra stand on a wooded hill above the left bank of the Dobra reservoir in Lower Austria. The site overlooks the lake and the valley of the River Kamp, five kilometres west of Krumau am Kamp. A medieval stronghold, it was first recorded in 1186 when Hertnit von Dobra appears in a charter. The name comes from the Slavic word for oak forest. By the early eighteenth century the estate belonged to Baron Johann Philipp von Ehrmann, who moved from the crumbling castle to the newly built manor house at Wetzlas. The castle gradually decayed after its owner left, and the Windhag Foundation now owns the ruins. In 1996 the local group Pölla Aktiv took a lease and carried out partial repairs. The association uses the site for concerts and festivals, including Klangraum Dobra, a gathering for medieval music and literature. A documentary film from 2018 shows how such heritage places find new roles in the twenty-first century. Visitors walk along the grassy ramparts and look down on the reservoir from the highest point. Ivy covers parts of the remaining walls, and the stonework shows the castle’s medieval layout. The surrounding woodland offers quiet paths and views across the valley. The ruins stand within easy reach of the Kamp valley cycle route, linking them to other historic sites nearby.
