Behnbrunnen
Image: Gerhard Kemme · Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Behnbrunnen stands in a small green corner at the junction of Behnstraße and Königstraße in Hamburg-Altona. The bronze figure of a young woman is the only part left from the original 1890 fountain. The artist was Wilhelm Giesecke, a sculptor from Altona.
The fountain honours Caspar Behn, who served as mayor of Altona from 1830 to 1853. It was first placed near the Goethestraße and the Allee, but was destroyed in the Second World War. The figure survived, was stored away, and in 1963 set up again in its present position.
The woman in the sculpture is an Okeanide, a sea nymph. She holds a ship model in her right hand and a leafy branch in her left. Water spouts from the mouths of fish at her feet. The figure stands on a plain concrete base inside a plain, hexagonal basin.
