Traiskirchen tram depot

The Wiener Tramwaymuseum’s depot stands in Traiskirchen, a town in Lower Austria’s Baden district. It occupies part of the old Semperit factory complex, now the Gewerbepark Traiskirchen, where a large hall and storage rooms were adapted for trams. The building has four wide gates leading to eight tracks, giving every vehicle its own place. A restoration workshop was built inside so neglected trams can be brought back to display condition. The depot also keeps spare parts and tools for the collection. The collection is worth the journey because it preserves vehicles that once ran on Vienna’s streets. Names like Type L No 502, G3 No 2103 and ULF-197 show the variety of designs. Some trams date from the early 20th century, others from the 1960s, offering a clear view of how Vienna’s public transport evolved. Without this depot, many of these historic cars would have been stored far away or lost. The workshop ensures that more can eventually join the public exhibition in Erdberg. Visitors find rows of restored and unrestored trams under one roof. The oldest stand next to modern prototypes, their colours and shapes telling different stories. A few trams carry advertising from past decades, adding another layer of history. Outside, the depot’s rail link once connected to the local railway, though today most arrivals come by road. Inside, the hall’s high ceiling lets long vehicles stretch out, while the workshop area hums with ongoing work. The depot is a quiet place, focused on keeping Vienna’s tram heritage alive for future generations.
