Katzenstein

The Katzenstein is a mountain in Saxony’s Erzgebirge range, rising above the village of Pobershau. Its plateau offers wide views over the surrounding valleys and ridges. To the east the land falls away into the Schwarzwassertal valley, while the Ringmauer rock formation arches across the horizon. Southeast of the summit stands the Rabenberg, topped by the Liebenstein’s steep crags. These crags once held Liebenstein Castle, built in the 12th century and still marked by tower ruins in the 18th century. The mountain’s open plateau and clear sightlines make it a good place to see the Erzgebirge’s layered ridges. The Ringmauer’s curved crest catches the light at sunset, while the Schwarzwassertal below shows the valley’s wooded slopes. The Liebenstein’s ruins add a reminder of the region’s medieval past. Visitors can walk the plateau’s grassy paths and look out over the wide landscape. Paths lead from Pobershau up gentle slopes to the plateau. The Ringmauer’s rock wall stands near the edge, offering a place to pause and take in the view. Below, the Schwarzwassertal’s tree-covered sides slope down to the valley floor. On clear days the Rabenberg’s pointed summit is visible to the southeast. The remains of Liebenstein Castle’s tower sit on its crag, a quiet witness to the mountain’s long history.
