ZEPHYR – raum für fotografie!
ZEPHYR – Raum für Fotografie stands for a decade in the Museum Bassermannhaus in Mannheim’s Quadrat C 4. The name echoes the building’s address and signals its purpose: a clean white cube devoted to video and photography by living artists. It sits beside the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen’s main campus, where the Zeughaus, Museum Weltkulturen and Curt-Engelhorn-Zentren share the same block. The space is worth the journey because it is the only venue in the region dedicated solely to contemporary lens-based art. It grew from the museum’s long engagement with photography, which began with the Reiß family’s gift in 1913 and later included the Gernsheim collection. Today it shows work by international names alongside younger talents, often in collaboration with the Forum Internationale Photographie on the upper floor of the Zeughaus. Inside, the single long gallery runs north–south, its high ceiling lit by a continuous skylight. White walls and polished concrete floors let the images and videos speak without distraction. The programme changes every six to eight weeks, so repeat visitors see fresh shows. The entrance is on the ground floor of the Bassermannhaus, where the ticket desk and cloakroom sit beneath a glass canopy that opens onto the quiet Toulonplatz.
