Etcetera Theatre

The Etcetera Theatre is a small fringe venue for theatre and comedy above The Oxford Arms pub in Camden Town. It was founded in 1986 by David Bidmead and has become a key spot during August’s Camden Fringe. The theatre won the 1996 Guinness Ingenuity Award for Pub Theatre and was nominated for the Peter Brook Empty Space Award the same year. The Etcetera has hosted over 2,500 productions, including early runs by comedians like Russell Brand, Simon Amstell and Al Murray. Premieres staged here include Alan Ayckbourn’s The Westwoods, Paul Todd’s Between The Lines and Chris Morris’s Blue Jam. Alan Bennett rewrote Kafka’s Dick specifically for performances at the Etcetera. Visitors find a compact theatre with a programme of new writing, comedy and revivals. Past productions like Bondage, which became the film Whore, and Bill Hicks’s Slight Return, which later moved to the West End, began here. The theatre has also premiered works that later won Fringe First awards, such as Stefan Golaszewski’s plays and What I Heard About Iraq.
