Old Anatomy

The Alte Anatomie stands in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, as a baroque secular building completed between 1723 and 1736. Designed by Gabriel de Gabrieli for the university’s medical faculty under Johann Adam Morasch, it features a mansard roof and a central pavilion framed by arcades. The site once held a 17th-century botanical garden where medicinal plants were grown for teaching. The building’s long history includes damage during the Austrian War of Succession in 1745, later repairs, and a major restoration in the 1970s. Professors such as Johann Leonhard Obermayr and Heinrich Palmaz von Leveling worked here before the university moved to Landshut in 1777. After decades as a farm, the city saved it for the 500th anniversary of the university’s founding. Today the Alte Anatomie houses the German Museum of Medical History. Visitors see the restored lecture hall with its baroque ceiling fresco by Melchior Puchner and the reconstructed room layout. The arcaded courtyard and central pavilion remain key features, while the surrounding area reflects the building’s past uses.
