Pen y Gadair Fawr

Pen y Gadair Fawr stands in the Black Mountains of south-eastern Wales as the second highest peak after Waun Fach. It rises 800 metres above sea level and is marked by a medium-sized cairn at the top. The mountain’s upper slopes are formed from Early Devonian sandstones, while lower slopes belong to the Senni Formation. Mudstone layers beneath have eroded to create stepped sections on the hillside. Peat has gathered in places, especially towards Waun Fach to the northwest. The peak is legally accessible to walkers under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, though no public paths lead directly to it. Mountain bikers can use forest roads in nearby Mynydd Du Forest, one of which reaches 715 metres just half a kilometre from the summit. The summit itself is a subsidiary top of Waun Fach, 1.5 kilometres away, and overlooks Pen Twyn Mawr six hundred and fifty-eight metres high two kilometres to the southeast. Visitors find a rugged summit with a clear cairn and wide views across the Black Mountains. The stepped sandstone slopes show how erosion has shaped the land. Heather and peat bogs appear on gentler sections, while steeper ground remains rocky. The air is often fresh above eight hundred metres, and the absence of crowds makes the place quiet. The nearby forest roads offer easier access for those who prefer not to climb directly.
