All Saints Church, Patcham

All Saints Church stands on a hilltop in Patcham, once a separate village now part of Brighton and Hove. A place of worship has existed here for about a thousand years, though the present building shows Norman features inside and a 13th-century exterior. Several Victorian restorations added structural changes, and the church still serves the local Anglican community. Grade II* listed, it contains a wide range of monuments and wall paintings, including one for Richard Shelley, an important nobleman linked to nearby Patcham Place. The churchyard holds Grade II-listed tombs, adding to the site’s historic character. The church’s origins trace back to a Saxon settlement recorded in the 10th century, when Patcham was a large rural parish. By the time of the Domesday survey in 1086, a church already stood here, part of a parish covering 4,325 acres. The building was rebuilt in the 12th and 13th centuries, with features like a plain chancel arch and Decorated Gothic windows added later. A narrow 13th-century tower with lancet windows was given a broach spire in the 19th century. Victorian restorers made major changes, including the addition of a north aisle in 1898, which greatly increased capacity. Inside, visitors find well-preserved medieval elements, including wall paintings and stone memorials. A 13th-century wall painting of Christ in Judgement was uncovered during the 19th century, hidden under layers of whitewash. The church’s plain exterior contrasts with its richly detailed interior, where a Norman or possibly Saxon doorway was reset in the north aisle. The surrounding churchyard and nearby historic tombs add to the sense of continuity with the past. Though surrounded by modern housing, the church remains a quiet reminder of Patcham’s long history.
